Apartment Complex to Celebrate Solstice
Statesman Journal – Salem,

The summer solstice means different things to different people; at the Orchard Park Apartments, it’s all about fun. And that includes lions and tigers and dragons. Residents and guests will eat, drink and be merry during the fourth annual Orchard Park Summer Solstice party. This year’s celebration, “Orchard Park Safari Solstice,” will start at noon Saturday and run until 5 to 6 p.m. The festivities will include food, soft drinks, a parade, games, prizes, contests, a pet parade, face painting, noise makers and music. “If someone … would like to join us, they can meet their future neighbors and the (apartment) staff,” said Jennifer Dougan, an assistant community manager at the apartment complex. It doesn’t cost anything to join in on the fun, and anyone can volunteer to help. The summer solstice is a celestial event that heralds the start of summer. It results in the longest day, when the sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. The Northern Hemisphere typically celebrates the summer solstice on or about June 21, considered the first day of summer. Orchard Park Apartment Homes has been hosting a summer solstice bash since 2006. It began as a way to bring residents together and to get acquainted with each other, Dougan said. Last year, nearly 200 people, including residents, attended the celebration. Apartment staff members hope to exceed that figure this year. Dougan said. “Knowing your neighbors is important,” she said. “The celebration brings everyone together as a community.”
